Colm Cille, also known as Columba, was the founder of the renowned monastery of Iona located in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. From the 6th to the 8th century, the monastic federation he established engendered a period of remarkable artistic and cultural development, resulting in masterpieces such as the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels.

This museum offers an insightful exploration of illuminated manuscripts, stone crosses, and treasure objects, each showcased within dedicated exhibition rooms focusing on specific art forms. Visitors have the opportunity to engage interactively with these significant artifacts in a manner that surpasses traditional museum display methods.

Manuscripts
Within this section, visitors can deepen their understanding of illuminated manuscripts by examining pages from ancient prayer books. Detailed images from these centuries-old texts illustrate the importance of Colm Cille as a pivotal figure in early Christian history. The Book of Kells stands out as perhaps the most renowned Christian manuscript globally; many recognize its origins and can identify some of its elaborately decorated pages.

Treasury
Scattered across various museums and libraries in Britain, Ireland, and beyond is a modest collection of treasure objects linked to Colm Cille and the monasteries within his confederation established in the latter half of the 6th century. Some items, known as ghost objects—those lost through events such as looting, fire, or flood—are recreated here based on historical descriptions of similar artifacts, offering insights into their original form.

High Crosses
This space features thirteen high crosses sourced from various regions of Ireland and Scotland. For the first time in this virtual exhibition, these crosses are brought together, providing a comprehensive overview of their diverse styles and regional characteristics.
